There's a really interesting article in USA Today that you've got to read. It talks about a survey by Fitness Magazine of 1,001 women about how they feel about trying on clothes - Some women have even been brought to tears. I know this scenario all to well since I came up with the idea for TrueJeans.com after an excruciating shopping experience with my own wife, who also was nearly brought to tears after having to try on dozens of jeans at a department store. EVERYBODY LOVES JEANS BUT NOBODY LIKES TRYING THEM ON AT A STORE!
"The survey of 1,001 women finds that when they try on clothes, they're not only deciding whether to buy the outfit, but they're also critiquing their bodies and finding flaws."
"Most (88%) say a trip to the clothing store has made them re-evaluate their bodies, and if they could magically change one part, 42% would target their waist; 23%, hips and thighs; 10%, rear; 10% chest; 4% arms."
It is really unfortunate that something as routine as trying on clothing can reinforce a negative body image. At True Jeans, we definitely believe in trying to be healthy and promoting a healthy lifestyle, but we also recognize that "healthy" comes in many shapes and many sizes. I would encourage you to read the article. You find it at http://www.usatoday.com/life/lifestyle/fashion/2008-08-12-shopping-body-image_n.htm

True Jeans is really excited about supporting the National Eating Disorders Association and its Embrace Your Genes campaign. The campaign is all about encouraging people to love their healthy bodies and embrace the genes they inherited. True Jeans is supporting the campaign by giving people a special discount to buy jeans that fit the TRUE you. This special discount can be found at EmbraceYourGenes.org. For every pair of jeans purchased using this discount, True Jeans will donate $20 to the National Eating Disorders Association.
We would also like to thank Microsoft and MSNBC for supporting the campaign. On Thursday, MSNBC featured EmbraceYourGenes banners on its homepage for the entire day. That's a $90,000 value. Microsoft has been very supportive of NEDA and this campaign.
True Jeans will continue to support NEDA and the Embrace Your Genes campaign throughout the year and we're proud of the cause and our association with NEDA. The campaign is a perfect fit wth True Jeans existing values and goal to be able help people of all shapes and sizes to be able to find jeans that fit. We still have some limitations and limited selection for certain sizes and body shapes, but we are still striving to expand our offering for all. We've made significant progress in this area as we started offering Plus Size women's jeans from brands like Svoboda and Jag Jeans in the past few months. The response has been overwhelming and we appreciate everyone who has taken time to offer feedback and better understand how we're doing from your perspective.
thanks again,

Body image problems and low self esteem are fueling a rise in the prevalence of eating disorders in our society. As many of the Dove Campaign for Real Beauty's efforts convey, there needs to be a change in the way we see beauty and the way we see ourselves. According to an article at DIY Father, over 40% of girls in first, second and third grade wish they were thinner. These are 6, 7 and 8 year old children! Something needs to change!
The article addressed an important part of self esteem building - having a supportive family that doesn't just shrug off concerns or reassure blindly by saying "you're beautiful", but that takes the time to discuss what's happening in the media, and tells the child specific things about her (or him!) that are beautiful. In particular, the article addressed dads.
We often think of our mothers helping us with things like body image questions or fashion advice, but fathers are important, too! There are many single father families out there as well, and it's important to help everyone learn more about empowering their children and helping them to develop a healthy body image. So dads, if you're looking for help, the biggest thing you can do is listen. Not only listen to your children, but listen to the messages that are getting sent their way in the media and online. You can't provide a bullet-proof shield from these messages, but you can provide the knowledge and strength to think independently and know how to handle them.
We were excited to find this article since it puts a new twist on helping reinforce a healthy body image. Our partnership with the National Eating Disorders Association will only grow stronger with the supportive thinking that the author of the DIY Father article has put forward. Remember, it's not only your jeans, it's what's in your genes that's truly beautiful!

Ok everyone, I know this is another ANTM post, but you don't think I couldn't let the finale happen without an update, do you?! Saleisha is Cycle 9's Top Model winner, and the recipient of a fantastic modeling contract, Seventeen Magazine cover and spread, and the title of Cover Girl! I'm very excited for her. There's some buzz going around by upset fans of the other models claiming it was unfair because Saleisha attended Tyra's T-Zone camp and modeled on her talk show before coming on ANTM. The cries of outrage claim favoritism, that it's unfair and she shouldn't have been allowed on the show. What do you think of this? I'm kind of on the fence.
On one hand, I can see how people would see that she had a bit of an advantage, having been around Tyra prior to the show. I'm sure if I were a contestant I'd be gasping with the rest of them, feeling a bit jealous at my inherent disadvantage compared to her. But on the other hand, a model is a model is a model. No matter how you slice it, Saleisha has the talent to embody not only the modeling talent of a Cover Girl, but the personality and poise. Some argue that she's not 'high fashion' enough, but if you look at a Cover Girl commercial...that's exactly what it is - commercial! I think Saleisha definitely stepped up her game toward the end and did her best to compete against the more fierce looks of fellow models Jenah and Lisa (I think she went home too soon). And with the haircut that they gave her during the makeover, I think that alone deserves some praise to work it out amidst that. It was supposed to be 'edgy' but I'm not sure that's what it accomplished. Regardless of hair, Saleisha definitely embodies the qualities of 'true beauty', inside and out.
Well,...now another cycle of Top Model has come and gone. What will I do on my Wednesday nights now?! I guess it's time to look forward to another cycle in the Spring, and find another show to latch onto until then. I think it might end up being American Idol, though I'm not as into that as I once was because it's gotten a bit stale. That and they didn't pick me when I auditioned! But I'm not bitter, I swear...
Watch for some more ANTM updates in the Spring. For now, check out our jeans of the week for a pick me up during the post-Top-Model blues.

So it's been a while since I've commented on True Life. But I like to drop in every now and then to give you a heads up about things that I'm really excited about. First of all, I would like to thank everyone who has taken time to make comments and contribute to this ongoing dialogue that True Jeans supports about fashion and style on our True Life blog. True Life is becoming a really meaningful community, and yes... we are listening.
I am really excited to announce that True Jeans has recently signed an agreement as a core sponsor of the National Eating Disorders Association (NEDA), which is the leading non-profit group in the fight against eating disorders. In January, we will be launching a campaign with NEDA called EMBRACE YOUR GENES to promote a healthier appreciation of the unique bodies that we've all be given, and to call attention to the growing epidemic of eating disorders which are seriously affecting thousands of people. Eating disorders have the highest mortality rates of any mental illness. Prior to my recent involvement with NEDA, I was pretty naïve about how serious an issue eating disorders are. Last week I attended a benefit dinner for NEDA that was very educational and inspiring. Actor Jamie Lynn Siegel from the Sopranos was recognized for her ongoing support of NEDA and for the attention and awareness she has brought to this issue.
Dove was also recognized for Campaign for Real Beauty, a powerful voice in promoting healthier body images for women in a world that constantly imposes toxic images of unhealthy and unrealistic beauty aspirations. Dove has set a great precedent for young fashion companies like True Jeans to follow, promoting a healthy version of beauty. At the dinner, they showed a recent Dove ad on a big screen that I thought was very powerful. It made me think about my daughter and the bombardment of toxic media messages that she will be faced to defend herself against. The commercial is called Dove Onslaught, and I'd like to share it with you if you haven't yet seen it. Many people in the audience that night were left in tears after watching this commercial.
Big applause for Dove.
True Jeans has its work cut out for itself. Three positive things that True Jeans is working on right now to improve in this area, which some of you may already be aware of, include:
1. Continuous research and fit testing so that we can offer our services for larger sizes (plus sizes). We already have some great plus size brands on board, which aren't quite available on our site yet, but will be soon.
2. Over the next few months we will be making efforts to integrate more diverse body types in the imagery on our website. True Jeans' goal is to help people of all body types find jeans and apparel that fit and eliminate the dressing room forever. We would like to better convey that in our imagery.
3. We're sponsoring NEDA's EMBRACE YOUR GENES campaign to promote healthier body images and join the fight against eating disorders.
Please share your ideas or feedback with us about eating disorders or the unhealthy body images that pervade the media. Have you, or someone close to you, ever been affected by eating disorders? Do you think this is a serious problem or a vanity disease? What should fashion and beauty companies do promote healthier body images?
I look forward to hearing from you, and we'll keep you posted on the upcoming Embrace Your Genes campaign.
Sincerely,
Romney Evans

As I was sitting down for my weekly dose of guilty pleasure also known as America's Next Top Model last night, I got to thinking. In between each segment of the show was commercial after commercial for beauty products, diet foods and other advertising that's supposed to speak to the show's target audience. Does it speak to us? You bet it does. But what does it say to us? We're too fat, our lashes aren't long or full enough, and we should vote for Hillary Clinton - ok, maybe the last one is just because of the time of year. But still! What is going on, Tyra?! And this is what made me think back to a few weeks ago.
This season, I was delighted to see Sarah, not only because she's from Massachusetts, but because she was the first girl to walk in who was right in the middle. Not super skinny, not plus size. Don't get me wrong! Models of all shapes and sizes can be gorgeous, but I was just intrigued that she didn't fit the traditional mold of any previous contestant on the show. Instead of categorizing herself, Sarah walked in, told the judges to take her as she was, and they did. I remember Jay Manuel saying something like, "well she's not skinny and she's not plus size,....what is she?" and Tyra replied, "she's real size!"
They were all excited and were going to have this whole new category of model for Sarah, representing all of the ladies out there who really are just kind of in the middle. But THEN! As the weeks went on, she started losing weight. She insisted that she wasn't doing it on purpose, but the judges started complaining that she wasn't big enough or small enough, and thus, she was eliminated. And this is when I said, "What is going on, Tyra?!"
I remember sitting there with my mouth hanging open, listening to Tyra's reasons for eliminating Sarah, and I couldn't help but wonder what Tyra really thinks. The woman leaving this girl sobbing, packing her bags to go home with probably a worse self image than she's ever had, is the same woman proudly declaring her weight on her chest on a red bathing suit and encouraging the rest of her studio audience to do the same. Granted, they're not all contestants on America's Next Top Model, but there was certainly more to Sarah's beauty than her weight. The brief glimpses we got of her on the show revealed a bubbly person with a fantastic sense of humor, a beautiful face and body and the education and poise that I think anyone would agree shows the true spirit of a Cover Girl, and in terms of our topics at True Jeans, of true beauty.
Regardless of the reasons that she was eliminated, I grew to really like her by the end. Granted, that could just be what the editors wanted us all to think. What do you think? Did you think it was a fair elimination? Who was or is your favorite Top Model Contestant?

The winter season (at least on our side of the coast) is underway. I woke up to a bit of frost on my car, and there is no denying that there are some cold mornings to come. Having lived in New England all of my life, I know how hard it is to find a flattering and fashionable coat that meets my winter warmth standards.
To my delight, I found some great hints in this months Issue of O Magazine. The article, entitled ‘The Right Coat For Your Body’ gives readers tips on just that—finding the perfect fitting, flattering winter coat. Now, a few of the price points in the coats featured in the article are a bit high, so I have put my own twist on the piece. I’ve found the same styles in the suggested coats online, all priced$300.00 or less. So here we go…
Problem: Some coats are bulky, taking away from our natural curves. For women that want the look of softer curves, a jacket with side button closures and tailored lines is suggested. I found a great jacket from Revolve Clothing. This is a lighter jacket spinning off from what is shown on Oprah’s magazine, but should create the desired effect of softer shoulders and a more pronounced, but soft waist.

Problem: Do you have a great waist, but a weaker upper half? Many women experience the same problem and would like to find a coat that, by the jacket’s style, accentuates their shoulders. Draping around the neck and shoulders is the best way to show off your upper half. This gorgeous wool coat from Marc Jacobs on Bluefly is a perfect fit. Wrapping around the waist still shows off your natural waist line, but the open v-neck and draping around the shoulders will help you with your fit needs.
Problem: Some women try to hide the area between their hips and knees in heavy ankle length coats. Well, O Magazine provides a solution: find a peacoat style more fitted around the upper waist, which forms into a a-line towards the bottom and make sure the coat is tailored to end above the knee. I would also suggest wearing this coat with slimming clothes, like a high waisted but fitted pair of jeans like Kasil Jean's Tribeca, or a pencil skirt with herringbone leggings. I found the perfect coat on Bluefly again. A DKNY wool pea coat with extended collar, drawn in waist and a lower cut to end right above or at your knee.
Problem: Need space for a bigger bustline, but still want room to move? A cocoon shaped coat is perfect for this fit battle. The coat’s shape allows for a full range of motion without looking like you’re swimming in the jacket. In fact, this style of coat which is lightly gathered at the bottom is coming back into style. Back in the 20’s the cocoon shape substituted for capes to offer better protection in the winter months. Because these coats are so popular, it was really hard to find them within our 300.00 budget, but I did get lucky on Oasis a great black and white wool blend with fashionable buttons and a funnel collar will do the trick!
Problem: In the 50’s A-line swing coats came into style, and let me tell you, it simply isn’t old yet! Every season new A-lines appear in better wool blend and colors than before. If you have a pear shaped waist line, which many of us do, this is the coat for you. Of all the coats suggested here, this is the easiest to find at your local department store. However, if shopping on line is more your style, check out this coat on BlueFly by Adam Meets Eve.

Problem: As a petite woman myself, I look for a coat which will give me a little more height. This great coat from La Redoute is just what I’d purchase. It has a wrapover look to give my torso a longer look and a partial funnel neck to give me more height up top around my neckline. The coat shows more leg, which also gives the desired illusion of height. Match that up with a great pair of heels and fitted bottoms and you’re ready to go!
I hope this helps you all either when browsing online or during in-store shopping trips!
If you have any other fit problems we can help you out with feel free to leave a comment and I’ll work on finding the right coat for your body. If you have any other favorite styles or stores online for coats feel free to share it in a comment as well! Happy Shopping!

Reading an article in Ontario’s online paper, The Star, about the tragic death of 32 year old Canadian real estate agent Krista Stryland prompted this post. Krista passed last week in the emergency room following complications from a liposuction procedure performed by Dr. Behnaz Yazdanfar at the Toronto Cosmetic Clinic.
The world’s emphasis on the perfect physique, face and overall image has taken the media by storm. Shows like Dr. 90210 are showing the face of women who have made the decision to alter their bodies by having surgery. Magazines and websites are flooded with news about which star got what procedure, like Heidi Montag of The Hills decision to have a breast augmentation. Stephanie, over at Back In Skinny Jeans wrote a similar post about the 15 worst celebrity plastic surgery blunders. You can check out this post as well for more photos and commentary about the top 15. But things don’t always work out for Hollywood celebs that choose to have surgery; in fact, Rose McGowan was just turned down for a role in Speed Racer because the studio felt she has been so altered that no one will recognize her on the screen. Here’s a before and after from a popular celebrity plastic surgery website.

So what do you think? Have things gone too far in terms of celebrity plastic surgery and augmentation?

We have received many messages from men asking how to pair shoes with their jeans for various occasions. I have been searing through the web and found a few useful resources for all the questioning men reading our blog:
About.com has a whole page about men’s shoes to wear specifically with denim. About also boasts another article about men’s shoe suggestions in general.
Ehow has a great seven step process to find the shoes to match with your denim perfectly. I just love having steps, makes everything so much easier to remember.
To make it easy on everyone, here are a few steps and suggestions to remember compiled from everything I’ve read.
Make it a Casual Thing...
Sneakers are always a safe bet for a casual look with jeans. Some easy to find favorites are Pumas and Adidas. These brands offer a more retro style offering and can be seen on streets from LA to NYC.
One Step up…
Boots and slip-ons are an easy and not to mention faster alternative to sneakers. If you’re going the boot route make sure to find something a little more cutting-edge or urban. Straps, buckles and especially square toes are always sleek and in style. Unlike women’s boots, Men’s look best in an ankle boot, regardless of style or material.
Lace it Up
Most sites suggest choosing an Oxford or any other lace up loafer based on the shirt you are wearing. For example, a tailored button down denotes a nice pair of Oxfords but a more casual T-Shirt is better with sneakers.
No Fail Advice Tidbits
Stay away from anything shiny. Overly shined leather, patent leather or shiny animal skins are a bit over the top when it comes to jeans. Stick to faded or distressed leather or suede if you have to.
Make sure to match your shoes to your belt.
Any other suggestions?

There seems to be an external disagreement between old and new schools surrounding what ‘business casual’ is. The custom of ‘casual Fridays’ has been more accepted in years past, with most organizations launching to a ‘everyday business casual’ state of mind as of the past few years. Thank you, Silicon Valley, for spreading the idea!!
So…let’s go ahead and define it, shall we? Or better yet, we will let Wikipedia do it for us:
“Business casual, also known as smart casual, is a popular dress code that emerged in white-collar workplaces in Western countries in the 1990s. Many information technology businesses in Silicon Valley were early adopters of this style of dress. … some Silicon Valley entrepreneurs such as Steve Jobs are known to wear jeans as part of the business casual look. In academic and research settings, however, jeans may be worn with a dress shirt. The second from the top button may also be opened in addition to the very top button.”
I am one who likes to dress a bit casually at work. I am also interested in any way to defend my right to dress more on the casual side. Sure, capris or skinny jeans might not make the cut, but what about a great trouser cut? I wear my pair of Orchid Wide Leg Trousers quite a bit with a dress shirt or sweater. To me, the key to wearing jeans to work is ensuring that the details in the seams and back pockets are simple and the wash in more monochrome and on the darker side instead of lighter washes with a distressed look.

I’ve recently found my silver lining, not to mention new source of rationalization!! In a recent
Boston.com article, research conducted by Ladders.com was shared. Ladders polled over 1,000 executives who make more than 100k annually, about their own (and their employers’) view on business casual. The response to me was great! Results found that of respondents polled:
- 62 percent said business casual is their standard workplace dress code
- 80 percent of executives prefer to wear more casual attire at work
- 42.2 percent mention that they see more company’s adoption a less formal dress code
- 22.3 percent said the definition of ‘business casual’ has stretched to include JEANS!
On the flip side, however, as reported by USA Today, some employees are finding that their industry does not think business casual is appropriate. I guess you have to look at business casual through the eyes of your boss, not to mention the industry you work in. There are helpful hints all over the web, one of which is About.com’s HR section. These sites are especially helpful if you don’t have a written dress code at work.
For a good laugh to see just how far telecommuters will go to stay comfortable at work, click here.
These are problems and questions we all face at some point. Feel free to share your opinion or story here.

Having a big bosom may sound like a blessing to many women but it can sometimes be difficult to find the right clothing to properly flatter a big bust. Big busted women know that dressing their shape pose unique problems. To down play a top heavy chest, you should try to put together entire outfits that help make your chest appear more in proportion with the rest of your body.
First, avoid wearing baggy, shapeless tops. One common mistake many women with large busts make is to buy baggy tops in the hopes of hide their breasts. But baggy tops only serve to add the illusion of pounds, so you look heavy and busty. You should choose tops the glide over and follow your curves.
To best play up your curves, be aware of necklines. Look for v-necks, scoop necks, and open-collar button-ups. Each of these styles help to draw the eye upward, taking the emphasis off your chest. Opening your neckline with tops like these will help to make it seem longer.
Work on creating outfits that help elongate your midsection to help stretch you out. Jessica Simpson is a perfect example of how elongating your midsection can work to your advantage. In the photo on the left, Jessica’s unflattering high-waisted pants make her breast appear to be sitting right at her hips. On the right however, Jessica creates a longer torso line by wearing lower-cut jeans and an untucked t-shirt.

All you petite ladies out there know just how difficult it can be to perfectly flatter your petite frame. Fit is all-important on a petite figure, so shop carefully.
Because you are working with a smaller frame, you do not want to overwhelm your shape with big, bulky or overly embellished clothing. Reese Witherspoon outfit on the left is much more flattering because the streamlined, form fitting clothes make her appear slimmer.
To help elongate and visually lengthen the leg, try a pair of tailored bootleg jeans. Kasil’sChelsea or Tribeca Trouser are to good options for creating a streamlined leg without adding bulk. With many style available in short length, !iT jeans is another great brand that offers lower rises in many styles that can work well on petite figures. Always remember that length is one of the easiest things to fix. Learn more about hemming options here.
Check out People Magazine’s August Style Watch Issue for more information on how to best play up your shape.

In May 2007 Steven Vogel released the book, Streetwear found here. Vogel is a freelance writer and critic and has contributed to several international magazines and websites. He is also the Global Special Projects Manager at Burton Snowboards.
Vogel is an enthusiast for all things street. In his own blog post announcing Streetwear’s release Vogel writes about his own goals and aspirations behind creating this work:
“What I wanted to achieve with this book is not really that simple to answer with one statement. I wanted to gather all my friends, colleagues and people that have inspired me in one way or other and get them to sit around a table, eat some BBQ and drink beers and talk about our experiences, thoughts, fears, goals and opinions about the subject of streetwear and subsequently this sub culture which has, for all of his, turned from fan, life to work and hopefully still encompasses all these facets…you will not find the who’s who of streetwear here, some people whom I wanted to participate didn’t want to, I didn’t know them or they had no time…I don’t want to preach about what it is streetwear and what it is … Nor are any of the contributors interested in telling you what to think. Each contributor shares their story, their idea’s, their thoughts on their very own personal journey in this sub culture through either interviews and / or short stories that were conducted throughout 2006.”
In addition to his other achievements, Vogel curates the annual streetwear show, 'Untitled'. Here is some information about the 2007 and 2006 parties . 'Untitled' is part of the BREAD & Butter international street culture tradeshow held in both Berlin and Barcelona every year.
I would suggest to any interested in street or urbanwear to check it out! If you’ve already read it, or have suggestions on other books on the streetwear sub-culture I ask you to share the wealth in a comment!
To read more of Steven Vogel’s commentary go to his blog featured on Hypebeast. There are a variety of blogs featured on this site about kicks, jeans, graffiti, art, and music. All are great reads with an international flavor.
